New Electoral Act Sparks Debate Among Political Stakeholders

admin

The recently amended Electoral Act has sparked heated debates among political stakeholders, with some hailing it as a progressive reform and others questioning its implications for smaller parties. The act, signed into law last week, includes provisions for electronic voting, stricter campaign financing regulations, and harsher penalties for electoral violence.

Supporters, including the ruling party, argue that the amendments will strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by ensuring transparency and accountability. “This is a win for the Nigerian people and a step toward restoring faith in our electoral process,” said House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

However, opposition parties and smaller political organizations have raised concerns about the cost of compliance with new campaign finance laws, fearing it may limit their competitiveness. “While we support transparency, these provisions must not disenfranchise smaller voices,” said a spokesperson for the opposition coalition.

As the debate continues, civil society organizations are urging the government to provide resources and training to facilitate smooth implementation. The new act is set to be applied in the upcoming by-elections.
