The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a groundbreaking electronic voting system set to revolutionize elections in Nigeria. At a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, unveiled the technology, describing it as a step toward ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in 2027.
The new system features biometric authentication and real-time vote transmission, which experts say will reduce electoral fraud and enhance transparency. “We have learned from past challenges, and this technology will address many of them,” said Yakubu.
Civil society organizations have hailed the move, with several urging INEC to train both electoral officers and voters early to prevent technical issues. However, some opposition parties expressed concerns about its implementation, calling for more stakeholder consultations.
With Nigeria’s population increasing and voter participation becoming a focal point, the new technology is expected to ease the voting process while boosting public trust in elections.
